의인은 없나니 하나도..??

“There is no one righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10)

로마서를 보면, ‘의인은 없나니 하나도 없으며’ 라는 말이 나온다. 위의 영어 문장(not even one)을 보면 ‘단 한명도 없다’ 라고 봐도될듯 싶은데…

법 없이도 잘 살만한 사람들은 의외로 많은 듯 보이고, 평생 김밥을 팔아서 번 전재산을 모 대학에 기증하신 그런 훌륭하신 할머니도 계시고, 자신이 태어나고 자란 모국을 떠나 머나먼 이국땅에서 40여년의 시절을 나병환자들과 함께 보내신 그런 분도 계시고… 우리가 사는 이 세상은 생각했던 것보다는 덜 삭막하고 의외로 “의인”으로 인정받을 만한 사람들이 많이 있는데… 왜 의인은 하나도 없다고 하는 걸까. 로마서에서뿐만이 아니라 성경은 그 전체를 통하여서 의인인 사람은 한 사람도 없다고 말해주고 있는데, 성경에서 말하는 의인에 대한 기준은 우리가 생각하는 것과는 많이 다른 것이 아닐까?

이 사진은 초호화 스타들의 집마냥 화려하지는 않지만, 아담하고 잘 지어지고 가꾸어지고 관리된 집의 모습이다. 거창하지는 않을지라도 모두들 한번즈음은 이러한 집에 사는 사람들에 향하여 부러움의 눈초리 혹은 찬사를 보낼만도 하다. 그리고 이 집의 내부는 아래의 사진과 같이 아주 잘 정돈되고 모든 것이 잘 배치되고 꾸며져 있다….

집에 대한 이야기를 하는 것은, 바로 내 자신의 모습을 이에 비유해 보기 위해서 이다. 나는 지금껏 내 스스로 모든 법들을 잘 지키며 착하고 성실하게 살아왔음을 자부하곤 했다. 간혹 반항을 하긴 했지만, 부모님께 언제나 사랑받고 인정받는 아들이었으며, 학교에서도 또한 성실한 학생이었고, 또 교회에서도 많은 분들께로부터 사랑받고 존중받는 삶을 살아왔었다. 내 스스로도 크게 잘못하거나 범죄한 일이 없고 또한 그 누구의 마음에 상처를 준 적도 없었으며 - 고등학교 시절 나에게 자신의 감정을 고백한 여학생들에게 무뚝뚝함과 냉정함으로 그들의 마음을 돌려세운 몇 번의 경우를 제외하고 ㅎㅎ - 내 주변 사람들에게 늘 베풀며 도와주는 삶을 살아왔었다고 스스로 생각했었기에, 내 스스로 “의인”이라고 생각하며 살았다… 물론 주변 사람들에겐.. 그리고 입 밖으로는 항상 “전 죄인입니다. 참 한심하고 보잘 것 없는 사람입니다.” 라고 말했지만…

겉에서만 바라다보면 저 위와 아래의 집들처럼 잘 다듬어져있고 정돈되어져 있고 깨끗하기에 내 집을 다녀가는 사람들은 늘 나에 대하여 칭찬을 하고 난 입으로는 겸손한 듯 말하지만, 속으로는 나 정도면 충분히 괜찮은 사람이라고 생각했었다. 괜찮을 수 밖에…….. 라고 생각할 수 밖에….

하지만 어느날 나는 내 집의 지하실을 들어가볼 기회가 있었다. 예전에는 미처 이 집에 지하실이 있는지도 지하로 통하는 문이 있는지도 모르고 살았었는데 말이다. 그리고는 이 지하실의 발견(?)이 내 삶을 송두리째 휘두르고 내가 그토록 자부심을 갖고 있던 내 집에 대한 완전하고도 새로운 공사를 의미하는지는 그 당시엔 미처 몰랐다.

지하실문을 열고 들어가본 그 속… 내 마음속 깊은 곳에 가득차 있는 것들은… 아무리 들여다보아도 선한 것이라고는 하나도 없었다. 온갖 종류의 오물들과 윗층들에서 아름답게 꾸미기 위해 버려질 수 밖에 없는 온갖 쓰레기들이 이곳에 가득가득 차 있었다. 질투와 시기, 교만과 허세, 험담과 증오, 난폭함과 분노, 거짓과 위선…… 이 모든 오물들이 가득가득 차 있었고 사실 내 집은 이러한 것들을 대들보삼아 바쳐지고 지어졌음을 나는 괴롭지만 인정하지 않을 수 없었다. 내 자신과 사람들에게 깨끗하고 정돈된 모습만을 보이려고 노력하였는데… 그 자체가 이러한 오물들 위에 세워진 내 자신에 대한 모순과 오류가 가져다 준 충격은 나로 하여금 그분의 십자가 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 “저는 정말 죄인입니다. 저를 떠나소서…..” 라고 하는 마음깊은 곳에서 우러나오는 진실된 고백을 하게끔 만들었다….

그 분은 그런 나의 고백을 들으시고 나를 버리지 않으시고… 스스로 청소부의 옷을 입으시고 나에게 오셔서 내 최악중의 최악의 오물들을 걷어내시고 그 후론 목수의 복장으로 나타나셔서 내 집에 대한 리모델링을 하기 시작하셨다. 처음 있었던 몇 번의 기초변경 및 대들보 변경의 대 공사때엔 내가 아끼고 아끼던 2층 서재와 안방을 허물어야 하는 고통을 겪어야 했지만, 그분께서 오셔서 대공사를 시작하신 이후 내 집은 한층 더 아름다운 모습으로 변해가는 것 같다.

그러한 공사를 계속 하시고 또 지하의 오물들을 계속해서 걷어내어 주시지만, 이것이 언제즈음 끝마쳐질런지는 아직 잘 모르겠다. 지금은 큰 공사들이 모두 마쳐져서 종종 사람들을 초대해 파티도 하고 거실 벽엔 액자도 걸어놓았지만, 간간이 그리고 늘 지속되는 그런 작은 공사들은 여전히 그분께서 현장지휘를 하고 계시다. 그리고 나는 나의 집이 매일매일 새롭게 바뀌어져가고 또 앞으로 계속 좋은 모습으로 바뀌어 나갈 것에 대한 기대와 기쁨/행복이 늘 넘친다. 간혹 그분께서 새벽부터 오셔서 망치질을 해대시는 바람에 잠을 제대로 못 자는 때도 아직 많이 있긴 하지만……

처음 내 집 지하를 둘러본 그날 그때의 충격. 모순된 내 자신의 모습과 내면 깊숙한 곳이 수북히 쌓여있는 온갖 오물들을 직접 대면하고 느꼈던 하늘이 무너지는 것 같은 그런 절망. 그리고서는 몇달간을 지내며 흘렸던 그 눈물. 그 이후 그분께서 오셔서 대공사를 처음 시작하셨을 때의 그 아픔. 그리고 지금의 형언할 수 없는 감사와 행복과 기쁨……그리고 또 계속 흘리는 눈물.

그리스도인이라면.. 아니 적어도 스스로 하나님을 믿고 예수님을 믿는다고 한다면 이에 대하여 반드시 같을 수는 없겠지만, 자신만의 경험 혹은 체험이 있어야 하지 않을까 나는 생각한다. 그분께서 첫날 타고 오신 집채만한 기중기가 내 집의 반 이상을 부셔버리긴 했지만, 그분께서 현장지휘를 하시기에 난 그분을 믿고 그냥 내 자신을 맡겨드렸었다. 그리고 많은 시간이 흐른 지금, 그때 그 분을 믿은 내 자신의 선택이 나는 옳았음을 나는 깨닫는다. 요즈음도 여전히 수시로 오셔서 집안 구석구석의 공사를 도맡아 해 주시는데, 지금까지 함께 일한 경험들이 있기에, 우리는 이제 서로 손발이 척척 맞는 훌륭한 파트너가 되어있다.

혹시 당신은 당신 스스로 자기 자신에 대한 어떠한 평가를 내리십니까?

예전의 저처럼 스스로 “의인” 이라고 생각하십니까? 아니면 “의인”까지는 아니더라도, 그냥 “착한 사람” 혹은 “죄인은 아니다” 라고 생각하십니까?

어떻게 생각하시던 그것은 자신의 자유이지만, 스스로의 모습을 자세히 그리고 꼼꼼히 살펴보고 자신의 모순과 추함을 보실 수 있다면 당신은 희망이 있습니다. 그분은 당신이 먼저 문을 열때 비로소 들어오셔서 공사를 시작하실 것이기 때문에……..

LEGO Robotics Building Room Inside…

 With other three students over this winter, I am building some tiny plastic self-running machine by LEGO Mindstorm set. There will be a public demonstration with the final product sometime on March. I hope that I could get many students’ as well as professors’ attention on demonstration, so that I could arouse their interests toward Robotics. School allowed me to use a place on campus for building and assembling during this break.

I flipped down one of the standing bookshelf around the wall to make a sort of playground for LEGO robots, then covered it up with a couple of foamboard. Each robot that my students and I make will play and run on here. I feel like this playground is little bit tiny for two or three robots, but it should be fine at this phase I believe…

Bye, dear friend!

Thor Sawin, an American from the Midwest, and I quickly became good and close friend each other since I got here in Yanji last summer. He is one of the most adventurous person I’ve ever known (below photo shows how many countries he has visited so far), his arguments and opinions are always perfectly airtight. Unlike other ordinary intellects, his compassionate and self-sacrificed mind still more brings out the luster of his intelligence. I want to be a person like him…

I had to say good-bye to him last week, since he is moving to South Korea to teach at Handong University. I do not know when I could see him again, which makes me little bit depressed, but someday I will. Thanks for being a good and best friend here in Yanji, and love ya in HIM.

Tuman - border town of China and North Korea

I visited the nearby border town, Tuman, with two other foreigners (one American & one German) last Sunday afternoon. Though Tuman is not that far away from here in Yanji, but I haven’t been able to come……

“Tuman” literally means gateway or doorway. Tuman has been prosperous as a doorway for a long time - from Chinese point of view it’s a doorway to the Korean Peninsula and from Korean point of view it’s a doorway to the continent. It has a train station which connects to Beijing and to PyongYang, and every train that goes into the North Korea from the Northeastern Province of China has to make a stop at Tuman.

Tuman River forms the boundary between the China and North Korea, and as you can see the photo above, the river is only around 60 or 70 feet wide. During the winter time the river is completely frozen which makes tons of N.Korean refugees possible to walk cross. Due to this reason, these areas are tightly guarded by border guards day and night.

It’s interesting to see the contrast between two sides separated by Tuman River. The Chinese side has many tall buildings and colorful apartments as well as tons of cars on the street, but the other side of the river - N.Korean side - is more likely watching back to the future. Buildings are very old, shabby, even though we were able to see many people walking on the street, but could hardly find any cars on the road…

Hope that HE raises up more Chinese Followers to help out these deserted land and to encourage Followers inside of N.K…….

LEGO Robot Sets Finally Arrived!!

I ordered two sets of LEGO Mindstorm from eBay U.S. three weeks ago. I’ve been checking its shipping status online everyday, and finally arrived here in Yanji few days ago. Wow!! (Thanks to Him for there hasn’t any problem in the Chinese Custom. These two sets could have been considered as luxurious toy sets in the Chinese Custom, which means I may had to pay extra tax… but turned out OK)

I still remember that I put 120% of myself into this LEGO when I was preparing for the ASABE Student Robotics Competition last summer. I felt strong passion and became to realize that I had a talent in making and programming robot stuff, which brought enormous joy to me. Hope that same joy… same passio… same desire to the YUST students!

I am going to work with these LEGO sets with three students over this winter break. (Here in China, the winter break goes till the end of February. New semester begins the first week of March.) I’ve already had a meeting with students yesterday assigning task/work to each of them. Hope that I would be able to have more close interaction with these students… Thanks Dad!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The Christmas is not a holiday here in Yanji, China. And I don’t see any Christmas tree or Christmas-deco stuff on the street, and it makes me little bit weird spend the Christmas day as like every other normal day.

So I made this “Merry Christmas” decoration on the office front desk wall. It’s not good enough to put outside on the street, but I guess enough to be reminded and be celebrating with the people I work together in this office.

This vehicle is considered as “automobile” in here and under the automobile regulation…

Robotics Demo/Competition Proposal…

I’ve had a thought about having robotics competition in YUST and leading student groups who are interested in, ever since I got here in Yanji last summer. There has been a sort of unstoppable desire and thinking toward this in my heart for a long time, which I can’t explain why but think from HIM above, so I wrote a proposal several weeks ago and turned in to the school.

I got the approval from the Dep. of Computer Science few days ago which let me start it up and lead students firstly over the winter break (Jan & Feb), so I give thanks to those who YARPed for me. Also give thanks to HIM.

St.Sophia in Harbin, China

Last Friday night, I took a train at 9:30 pm from Yanji to Harbin with these guys - two students and one English teacher - Thor Sawin - from Michigan. Despite of its high price, we booked the soft-bed place and spent all night till 7 am next morning on the train. It was very unique and interesting experience to spend whole night sleeping on bed in the train. (I grew up in Korea, and literally 4-5 hours are enough to cross from Northern far to South end. And I never took a train before in the States!)

Anyway, this St. Sophia church was build back in 1800s by Russian orthodox. (Harbin is located very closely to Russia, and I saw many Russians around.) There used to be 20 feet high wall surrounding the church built by Chinese communist when the city was “liberated” (Chinese term) in sometime 1900s, to keep it out of view from ordinary people. But a couple of years ago, they decided to demolish the entire wall to make this church as scenic spot, and now the church became a historic museum of Harbin.

I was sad when I saw all paintings on the ceiling were scratch off and rubbed out making ugly faces of each wall… sad.. sad… however, its night view was noble.
